Adobe CS3 - Thoughts On Design Tools...

A number of designers, have expressed dismay at the tools presented in CS3 and at how easy they make design appear. And whilst I can appreciate the fear some of these designers are feeling for their chosen profession, I am not so bothered. Design is a discipline and also an applied art which takes many years to become good at.

I'm not going to mince words here. Design Idiots don't give a crap about balance, integrity, harmony or any one of a myriad other principles we may consider as pros in our profession. Design Idiots will sit in front of a screen playing with CS3, Word, MS Publisher, or any one of many other tools, and fool themselves into thinking they are creating great pieces of art or design.

The tools are simply that — tools. As artists we must trancend the tools of our discipline and become more than craftsmen and mere practitioners. We must surpass the capabilities of the tools we use and expand our sensibilities to create good or even great works. It's not an easy thing.

Don't blame your tools. Use them to good effect. Don't look at the unskilled masses who play with your chosen tools. Rather transcend the tools you use and educate your clients about the value of your creative skills. You won't win everyone over, but remember this: those who don't care about your ability to help them and are looking only to their bottom line, are playing a game which may end up biting them in the arse.

Be a designer, not a whiner. Remember that DTP software didn't kill our careers in the 80's, any more than CS3 will today.
