The Workplace Environment

An enormous amount of literature exists online and offline about music in the workplace. Some people strap on a pair of headphones, turn on the iPod and their productivity takes a nosedive. Other people get a productivity boost out of it. Other people reserve judgement taking a more analytical, case by case approach (make that office by office I guess). Still others regard music in the workplace as nothing less than a potential motivator that should always be considered in one form or another.

Another group remembers the dark science-fiction short story "The Man Who Hated Noise" written by the prolific Robert Silverberg, about a future world in which every human is essentially surrounded by music, aural advertising, broadcasts, muzak and ambient sound during every waking moment of life. In the story, the central character is driven to near insanity by the relentless clamor. Personally, I like the hum of machinery (computers included), a clattery IBM selectric keyboard (though I can't use it any more because the Kinesis Maxim is easier on my wrists), and the sound of people exchanging information; in other words, a music-free office.
