DeBabelizer is Not a Slide Show Program

Somebody asked us about using DeBabelizer to create a slide show of their digital photo categories—500 photos at a time. Really. You can't do that and remain sane. Besides, DeBabelizer is specifically an image processing program for automated modification of large batches of images, not a slide show utility. For slide show creation without any image editing features, check out SWF 'n Slide. Adobe Photoshop Elements 4 provides easy to use image editing as well as good slide show features. A slide show consisting of 500 images will create an enormous file even if it's possible in the first place to reliably create and run such an enormous production with any known slide show software. We think it's smarter to create a series of smaller slide shows. For the Mac, a web search using the phrase "slide show software for Mac" will turn up more programs.

Digital Imaging and Graphic Design in 2006

For 2006, and looking far forward as well, Mario says that Asset Management is the key! Collections of digital photos are slowly growing into gargantuan proportions. Whether you need a huge enterprise-size asset management system or a desktop asset management system for Windows or Mac, there are lots of choices. For larger business or genuinely huge collections, have a look at Asset Bank and Cumulus. On the desktop, Aperture from Apple has taken the digital photography world by storm. For Windows, ACDSee 8 Pro is a brilliant choice. Look for Adobe LightRoom to compare with ACDSee and Aperture later in 2006.

What's Mario Using in 2006?

Respected graphic designer and imageer Mario Georgiou offers his short list of products he's going to be using extensively throughout 2006:

  • SketchUp is king for 3D work, design workups and quick rendering
  • Adobe Creative Suite 2 offers powerful new features and useful integration of all the professional Adobe tools
  • Invest in Adobe Acrobat beccause it's comparatively inexpensive and you can't be in the digital output business without it
  • QuarkXPress 7 is coming and is introducing robust asset management, output and prepress tools in this venerated desktop publishing program
  • The Adobe Macromedia line of web design and production tools remains the king of the mountain, so watch for new releases in 2006
