BullsEye is Not on Target

BullsEye has been absorbed into askSam Systems' SurfSaver and askSam products—or rather, SurfSaver and askSam now incorporate much of BullsEye's functionality. BullsEye's original maker, Intelliseek, is no longer in the software business. You can find SurfSaver and askSam here.

It appears as though a lot of companies which formerly offered unique search tools have been getting out of that business. Google, Yahoo!, and MSN have definitely taken over the market even for those people who are doing serious or very narrowly focused research. Except for the need for paid access to private databases (which has nothing to do with specific search tools), the major search engines are completely free of charge and offer powerful search languages that any researcher can use. We suspect that's the main reason Intelliseek got out of the search tool business.

QUE! CD/RW Driver Woes

QPS Inc., the maker of the QUE! external optical drive products, is no longer in business. If you're looking for a Mac OS X driver for the external QUE! USB CD-RW drive, you can still find it on VersionTracker. Note that the VersionTracker site can be quite slow sometimes. Windows XP installations don't need a specific driver. Just plug in the USB or Firewire version of the drive and let Windows detect the hardware.

Afraid Your Blackberry Will Stop Working?

The legal battle between Research In Motion (RIM), maker of the Blackberry, and NTP, patent holding company extraordinaire, continues to bemuse and entertain. If you actually believe that a District Court judge has the cojones to temporarily (or even momentarily) shut down RIM's Blackberry network, stay on top of all the latest blow-by-blow activity right here. This link will take you to the Toronto Globe & Mail web site, the biggest business newspaper in Canada. RIM is located just about an hour west of Toronto, in the small city of Waterloo, and you can be sure the Globe & Mail is following (and publishing) every word of the story. Our prediction? The judge (and everybody else paying attention and being aggravated by the situation) is likely going to order the warring children into a very small room to work it out without inconveniencing millions of paying customers. Mark these words too: the needs of the paying customers had better be at the top of everyone's list.
