Greeks Develop Haptic Navigational Aids
| Scientific American reports that a team of researchers at the Aristotle University of Thessaloníki in Greece have developed a system that can convert video into tactile, three dimensional maps designed to help blind people navigate. These "Haptic Maps" work with standard video camera equipment and are created through software that maps the data to a virtual 3D space. In this system, a special glove and wand applies force to the fingers to simulate the virtual space points. The system can be used to provide textured maps in order to create navigational guides for virtual maps. The system can even vocalise locations and other location information using speech synthesis.
